Resumen

Blanca Jeanette Kawas fue una activista hondureña protectora del medio ambiente asesinada en 1995. Su legado sobrevivió a su muerte y su ejemplo sigue en la memoria de los hondureños con conciencia social. Lastimosamente al igual que muchos otros activistas cuyas vidas se apagaron, se sigue exigiendo justicia a un Estado que parece no enmendar sus errores y hacer caso omiso a todas las recomendaciones para protección de los derechos de los defensores del medio ambiente; por lo que, a más de veinte años su muerte continua en la impunidad manchando una lucha y un legado escrito con sangre inocente. En abril del 2009 la Corte Interamericana de Derechos Humanos (CIDH) condenó a Honduras por la negligencia en su actuar en el caso y la violación de los Derechos Humanos sufrido por Jeannette Kawas y su familia. En 2010, el Estado reconoció su responsabilidad como parte de lo ordenado en la sentencia emitida por el tribunal. Esta sentencia hizo énfasis en la obligación de proteger a los defensores y defensoras del ambiente. Casi siete años después de emitida la sentencia, el pueblo hondureño tiene cerca de cien defensores asesinados, las omisiones por parte del Estado no han terminado.

Abstract

Blanca Jeannett Kawas was a Honduran environmental activist killed in 1995. Her legacy survived her death and her example remains alive in the memory of all Honduran people with social conscience, unfortunately, like many other activists whose lives were extinguished, justice is still demanded from a state that seems unwilling to amend mistakes and ignores all recommendations to protect the rights of environmental defenders. Impunity continues more than twenty years after her death, smearing a brave struggle and a brilliant legacy with innocent blood. On April of 2009 the Interamerican Court of Human Rights condemned Honduras due to negligence in its acting and the violation of Kawas’ and her family’s human rights. On 2010, the State assumed its responsibility as ordered on the judgment issued by the court that also emphasized the obligation of protecting the defenders of the environment. Almost seven years after the sentence and more than one hundred environmental activists murdered, the Honduran people saw the fall of yet another great human rights activist and the acting of the state remains the same.
